First US drug wholesaler adopts RFID

June 28, 2004—The US's seventh largest pharmaceutical wholesaler HD Smith has announced plans to implement an RFID-based drug tracking system at its distribution center. A later phase of the project will include rolling out RFID at an HD Smith retail outlet. The ultimate goal is fully enabled "electronic pedigree," wherein the entire distribution history of one unit of pharmaceuticals is tracked and easily accessible.
