ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, has established standards for various types of radio frequency identification technologies. Most deal with the air-interface protocol—the language that tags and readers use to communicate. For example, ISO 14443 is a standard for passive high-frequency (HF) RFID systems, and is used by many tags and readers designed for financial transactions.

ISO establishes other RFID standards as well. There are standards for how data is stored on a tag, for example. In addition, the organization has established conformance standards that standardize how to determine if a tag or reader conforms to the air-interface protocol standard.
