I wrote a column about this topic back in 2007. At the time, I suggested that “time and secrecy” were two of the biggest obstacles (see The Obstacles to RFID Adoption). Having read Geoffrey Moore’s books on the technology-adoption lifecycle, including Crossing the Chasm and Inside the Tornado, I would say that there is a natural inertia to adopting new technologies. Companies just won’t do it until a critical mass of early adopters have done so and settled on a market leader.
The benefits of RFID are clear in a number of applications, and there are many businesses deploying the technology across multiple industries. But there is no single industry in which RFID has reached a critical mass that would cause the technology to “tornado”—that is, for firms to adopt it en masse—though there are some that are close.
