After working as a technical marketing manager in the electronic security industry for the past 12 years, I am thinking of switching over to the RFID sector. Is this the right time to do so?

Yes and no. I say 'yes' because during the coming decade, radio frequency identification is expected to achieve widespread adoption, which will no doubt create many opportunities for both individuals and companies. I say 'no,' on the other hand, because no one is really hiring at the moment, and without experience in the RFID industry, you would likely have a difficult time finding a job.

If I were in your position, I would spend the next year or so making connections in the RFID industry, and really learn about the technology and what it can do. I would then watch for adoption trends—as you see major retailers or manufacturers roll out the technology, try to make the switch to the industry at that time.

I believe the future is very bright for RFID in the mid- to long-term, but the current economic environment is having an impact on growth, just as it is in all sectors. So in the short-term (say, over the next 12 to 24 months), job opportunities will be limited—but down the line, joining this industry could be a very smart move.
