It could do that, yes—if you could convince the port and your customer to allow you to install RFID readers.
At the ports, that might be unlikely, so an alternative option might be to employ hybrid RFID tags that also utilize Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. Savi teamed up with Numerex a few years ago to create such a tag (see Hybrid Tag Includes Active RFID, GPS, Satellite and Sensors). And WhereNet (now part of Zebra Enterprise Solutions) and Identec Solutions have also introduced hybrid tags (see WhereNet, Identec Solutions Offer GPS Tracking).
GPS tags will not work indoors or within a vehicle's cargo container, but if you could install an active RFID system at your facility and within your customer's storage facility, you could potentially achieve end-to-end visibility using hybrid tags.
