Is there any type of RFID reader available that costs less than $100 apiece and is able to read a tag up to 15 inches away?

I am not aware of any interrogator today that costs less than $100. There are some high-frequency (HF) modules that sell for around $300, and most readers sell for $500 or more. RFID USA, for instance, sells a FEIG USB handheld reader for $518. If RFID Journal‘s readership know of any low-cost options, please post a link to where our questioner can purchase one or obtain additional information.
