September 5, 2004—Despite what seem like constant headlines announcing that yet another retailer has issued an RFID mandate, there do remain companies that are not yet jumping on the bandwagon. Among them, electronics retailer Circuit City, whose CIO recently stated that RFID’s high price and still imperfect read-rates are contributing to the company’s decision to wait. Furthermore, some RFID industry analysts are detecting a slight softening on the part of Wal-Mart, who may now be recognizing that its mandate for RFID compliance by January 2005 cannot be met to the letter.
