January 14, 2005—Fisher Space Pen, maker of the similarly named writing implement that functions “upside down, in a vacuum, under water and at extreme temperatures,” will add RFID to the extensive list of pen usage capabilities. The “Hi-Pen” is set for introduction at next week’s Paperworld in Frankfurt. It will come equipped with an RFID tag from Sweden’s SOKYMAT, allowing it to double as a wireless security pass. The company is pitching the pen as a promotional opportunity that could be used at conferences and exhibitions to offer attendees a gee-whiz alternative to the standard name tag and swipe card identification schemes.

It remains to be seen whether embedding RFID in common objects like pens will gain traction as anything other than novelty. Really getting RFID capabilities into the hands of consumers will probably require embedding the technology in devices on which they increasingly depend, like cell phones. Indeed, Motorola and Nokia have made strides in doing just that; the former is working with MasterCard to deliver swipe payment options for low ticket items, while the latter is pursuing its Near Field Communication agenda with the likes of Philips and Sony.
