Starbucks Considers RFID for Delivery Solution

Starbucks is considering using an RFID solution to enable stores to receive deliveries from its 40,000 suppliers after business hours.

December 6, 2004—Giant coffee retailer Starbucks has about 40,000 suppliers from which it generates $5.3 billion in annual sales. Managing such enormous inventory volume can be problematic, such as when deliveries arrive mid-day and store clerks have to interrupt customer face time to accept them at the back door. To alleviate this and similar problems, Starbucks is considering an RFID solution nicknamed “dark deliveries,” in which deliveries are scheduled for after business hours. Delivery people would use an “RFID license-plate signature” to authenticate their identity, log access time, unlock the store room, and, eventually, save a record of what is being delivered.
