March 5, 2004—Radio frequency identification technology — dubbed RFID — is still in its nascent stages, but it is expected to be deployed much quicker than the bar code technology it may replace. And while some retailers may be slow to deploy RFID because it’s difficult to mesh with existing systems, they could be forced to adapt due to competitive pressures from retailers like Wal-Mart, which plans to debut the technology next year.
