March 10, 2005—SAP and Intel announced an RFID collaboration at the annual CeBIT show last week in Hanover, Germany. The purportedly new concept is to offer the ability to integrate RFID hardware devices directly with backend systems by endowing the edge devices with more intelligence, eliminating the need for typically-required intermediary software. The solution, which is designed to work with any business application running on Intel architecture, will allow direct control of the RFID devices from within the associated business applications, thereby streamlining the entire maintenance and monitoring process of the RFID device deployment. The collaboration will also leverage existing SAP partnerships by encouraging standardization around this new RFID-enabled vision of a “seamless bond of technology and business processes.”
Notably, the press release drops the ambitious phrase “plug-and-play,” a concept the Incucomm report mentioned above cautions against believing. When shopping for an RFID vendor, Incucomm advises, customer references should weigh more heavily than dubious claims of installation simplicity.
