March 3, 2005—Popular technology blog Engadget reports that a school in Japan where students go for special tutoring has deployed RFID to track its patrons comings and goings. Like the punch-cards of old, students must wave their RFID tagged cards in front of a reader upon arrival and departure from the school. The system then notifies the student’s parent by SMS that the child has entered or exited.
The U.S. and Japan have been leaders in the adoption of RFID for student tracking. A few weeks ago, a California school student-tagging initiative was shelved after nationwide media attention and uproar from local residents and who felt they hadn’t been properly informed.
