RFID Tag Shortage Taking Its Toll

November 17, 2004—The tag shortage problem has indeed taken its toll on the industry. According to the supply chain management expert Steve Banker at Massachusetts-based research firm ARC Advisory Group, the vast majority of the 24 companies he recently spoke with have complained of an inability to get their hands on a sufficient amount of RFID tags. Some have even affirmed the very question that was foremost on everyone’s mind in October when Alien Technology announced that it was sold out of Class 1 tags: the tag shortage may cause some of the Top 100 to miss Wal-Mart’s deadline. Of course, everyone is expecting just the opposite situation next year, when Texas Instruments and Philips are expected to jump in with both feet to the tag-making game. But until then, expect the RFID tag supply to remain tight.
