September 20, 2004—UPS plans to incorporate radio frequency identification into its supply chain operations and already has a number of RFID pilots underway. The oft-cited hurdles to realizing the technology’s full potential — performance issues, lack of standards, and data inundation — are tempering UPS’s enthusiasm, however. And, surprisingly, there is actually something RFID cannot do that UPS’s current barcode system can: capture the sequence of packages on a conveyor belt. Despite these issues, UPS expects to permanently adopt the technology, with some pilots expected to move from testing to production next year.
