August 19, 2004—McDonald’s and Verifone have partnered to offer the fast food chain’s customers a wireless, RFID-based payment option at its drive-throughs. Based on MasterCard’s PayPass, the system is similar in concept to Mobil Oil’s four-year old RFID-based Speedpass, in which customers pay for purchases by waving their prepaid card or key fob over a reader. In contrast, McDonald’s system will charge the purchase to the customer’s Mastercard account. Dallas and New York City will be the first locations where the system is tested.
