November 30, 2004—While RFID tag shortages have grabbed the spotlight for the last month or so, a far more pernicious and long-lasting shortage has been all but ignored: labor. As companies have ramped up their RFID deployments throughout 2004, workers knowledgeable in RFID have grown increasingly rare. This shortage is expected to become more acute in 2005 and 2006 as the rate of adoption accelerates. Part of the issue is that RFID expertise requires a rare combination of hardware, software, and business process skills. Hoping to help alleviate the problem, the Association for Automatic Identification and Mobility (AIM Global) and the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) this week announced a joint certification program initiative for the RFID industry. The idea is to encourage more IT professionals to develop an expertise in RFID and draw them into the industry.
