October 20, 2004—The details of last month’s announcement by the pharmaceutical industry that it had successfully completed its trial to test item-level RFID tagging highlight the particulars of drug distribution. The project was not only aimed at introducing supply chain visibility, the standard goal of almost all RFID initiatives, it also sought to ensure drug authenticity and enable “reverse logistics,” in which drugs are shipped back to the supplier because they are expiring or being recalled.
