November 2, 2004—Big news from Nokia this week as it releases its Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled shell for the popular 3220 cell phone. Together with electronics giant Philips, the company will participate in a trial in Germany in which the new technology will allow passengers to purchase public bus tickets using their NFC-equipped cell phones. The young NFC technology is based on RFID and has been embraced by the likes of Philips, Sony, and Nokia as the likely enabler of the “M-commerce” revolution which will see many functions of the common wallet rolled into cell phones.
