October 24, 2004—Nokia had its RFID-enabled cell phone model on display at this week’s CTIA Wireless IT & Entertainment conference in San Francisco. The phone was announced months ago and has ignited the imagination of everyone from retailers to marketers to privacy advocates. Most believe that the convergence of RFID and cell phones is an inevitability, and indeed, there are announcements every other week of developments following that trend. This week there is the news (included in this issue) of taxicabs in Tokyo accepting RFID-based cashless payments using passenger cell phones, and last week there were developments in the Motorola/MasterCard trial initiative to offer a similar style of payment in fast food restaurants around the U.S.
