August 19, 2004—The highest profile retail RFID mandates came from Wal-Mart and Target, and it appears that the result is exactly what many predicted: other large retailers are following suit with mandates of their own. Drug-store giant CVS and grocer Kroger reportedly have RFID mandates under consideration. Furthermore, some of these companies are looking at item-level RFID tagging pharmaceuticals, whose high price and rate of counterfeit justify the added cost of a tag. It is expected that at some point in the near future all top 25 retailers will issue RFID mandates.
