There are many applications for which you can use a handheld interrogator to read tags at short distances. Near-Field Communication (NFC) is a standard for employing RFID in cell phones and other small devices. There are many applications for this technology.

One company, for instance, has embedded RFID in movie posters. When a moviegoer uses his or her cell phone to read an RFID-enabled poster, it calls up information regarding a particular movie on the phone’s screen, thus enabling that person to purchase tickets. A consumer can also pay for small purchases with an NFC-enabled cell phone, or even pay for bus fare in some cities.
