September 12, 2004—Savi Technology’s contract to supply the U.S. Department of Defense with RFID tags, readers, and supporting infrastructure will be increased by more than 100%, from $90 million to $207 million. The contract is part of a far reaching and highly publicized DOD initiative to RFID-equip its entire supply chain, from the factory to the front line. Including all of the DOD’s more than 40,000 suppliers, the gargantuan project, together with Wal-Mart’s similar initiative, is credited with propelling the RFID industry to its current level. Bids from RFID companies hoping to supply tags and readers are currently under review. 2007 is when the DOD is pushing to have completely RFID-enabled its supply chain.
