October 27, 2004—For those interested in gaining a more technical understanding of how RFID actually works, a quick 5-page introduction is offered here by Intel researcher Roy Want. Complete with accompanying illustrations, “The Magic of RFID” takes the reader through a brief history of the technology, its fundamental components and how they interact, what extensions are possible (environmental sensors, security, and memory), outstanding issues that still need improvement (reader collision, standards, and interference), and finally some of the privacy and social questions. A worthwhile read for anyone needing a strong primer on RFID.
