July 29, 2004—Last week’s RFID tag hacking demonstration at the Black Hat Security Briefings conference in Las Vegas has the industry astir. Will hackers one day be able to steal from retail establishments by rewriting pricing information found on the RFID tags affixed to store products? Unlikely, say many in the industry. Future RFID systems will include much stronger security protection than that used in the conference demo, for one thing. Furthermore, a hacker using a PDA or computer to reprogram a tag in a store would probably be detected.
