Battery Supplier Deploys RFID to Manage Product Inventory

A major automotive battery maker is using Seeonic's SightWare-Seeniq system, installed on shelving, so that it can view whether its batteries need to be restocked at third-party locations, such as auto repair shops and parts dealers.

Seeonic’s client wanted to monitor the demand for its products according to dealership and battery model. For example, the company may sell more of a specific model of batteries than it was aware, and its drivers might not deliver a sufficient quantity of that model. Conversely, a driver might deliver too many batteries of a particular type, which could then lead to overstocking at the store, or the need for the truck to transport the extra batteries back to the warehouse.

With the Seeonic system, James says, the company can view the number of batteries sold, and develop a Planogram in which the company would send a specific number of batteries of particular types, based on sales demand at each location. This data also enables its delivery-truck drivers to better manage their time, by providing the correct quantities and types of batteries as needed, and not to locations at which batteries do not require replenishment.

The system can also track each battery's manufacturing date, which helps the company to rotate new batteries as necessary, in order to clean and refresh them in the event that they have remained on the shelf for a specified length of time.

Finally, when as the batteries reach the end of their lifespan, they need to be returned to the manufacturer, which disposes of the hazardous materials and recycles other materials properly. Using a reader at that point, the company will be able to have details regarding the number of batteries being recycled, as well as historic data about the performance (length of life) of specific battery models.

The SightWare-Seeniq system is a finalist for the Best in Show at this year's RFID Journal Awards (see Finalists Unveiled for Sixth Annual RFID Journal Awards). Seeonic will demonstrate the battery rack at the Smartrac-UPM RFID booth (#512) during the RFID Journal LIVE! 2012 conference and exhibition, being held next week in Orlando, Fla.
