July 3, 2004—There are already plenty of successful RFID implementations. The difference between these existing projects and what the industry is aggressively moving towards today is interoperability; older projects were closed, standardless systems involving proprietary codes and architecture. The explosive promise of RFID will come, in contrast, only when standards are in place that allow companies to share the information that technology generates. Fortunately, this reality is in sight.
