Mar 03, 2013Hospitals and medical facilities must track the use, sterilization, storage and disposal of medical devices and supplies. Fujitsu's Ferroelectric Random Access Memory (FRAM), combined with radio frequency identification, is simplifying the task of assuring that these vital products remain clean and uncontaminated. RFID offers a quick and efficient digital means of monitoring supplies and maintaining inventory records, but most RFID technologies lack the durability and reliability necessary within a medical environment; for example, the gamma-radiation sterilization method would destroy standard tags. This technical paper introduces the company's FRAM RFID technology, which combines RFID's high-performance, high-capacity tracking ability with radiation hardiness, enabling it to withstand sterilization.
