February 1, 2005—German retailer METRO Group will expand its current RFID program from tagging pallets to tagging cartons and cases, adding one more level of granularity to its already leading supply chain visibility efforts. The company is aiming to complete the expansion by the end of this year, and by January wants to have 300 of its suppliers shipping tagged merchandise. The new case-level tagging will be done with GEN 2 chips from Avery Dennison, which will replace the tags used in the METRO initiative to date. At about 30 cents each, the new tags are cheaper and offer improved read rates. METRO is also reportedly testing item-level tagging and sensor technology, though there are no indications that near-term plans for either have materialized.
