I am developing a Web site with JSP/Servlets. One of the requirements is to use RFID cards to log in, but the reading distance should be limited to 15 centimeters (6 inches), in order to allow two users to be at the same workstation without confusing the reader. How much distance is allowed for the Omnikey 5321? I’ve read the specifications, but they just mention the frequency. Can a 13.56 MHz interrogator such as the 5321 be configured to read at a maximum distance of 15 centimeters?

I reached out to Omnikey, but I have not received a response.
I also reached out to Steve Halliday, founder of consulting firm Hitech Aid. Steve was unfamiliar with the Omnikey 5321 specifically, but said certain high-frequency (HF) readers can be configured to reduce the power output, which would limit the read range. You would probably need to experiment with the output controls to achieve the proper distance.
If RFID Journal‘s readers are aware of specific HF models that would enable you to control the power output, please post model numbers for Felipe. Thanks.
