RFID for Midsize Manufacturers

By Mark Roberti

RFID could play a role in helping companies compete with low-cost, offshore producers.

I was recently invited to do a podcast interview for the Better Process Podcast. The focus was on how radio frequency identification technologies can help small and midsize manufacturers.

All manufacturers, but particularly midsize ones, are under pressure from low-cost producers. Consumers want cheaper products, so retailers, eager to comply, turn to overseas manufacturers. But RFID technology can help midsize manufacturers by automating many of the processes typically done by hand, such as inventory tracking and delivering parts to the assembly line.

RFID is not a panacea, and it won't magically enable companies to compete. Still, by using RFID to track work in process, improve supply-chain efficiencies and satisfy customer mandates, the technology can help midsize firms in the fight to stay competitive.
