ThingMagic's Mercury3 model was introduced in 2002 or 2003—before the EPC Gen 2 RFID standard was ratified. As such, it was not designed to read EPC Gen 2 tags, and there is no direct upgrade path for such a device to support today's reader firmware. You will need to purchase a newer ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) RFID interrogator in order to read EPC Gen 2 tags.
