February 6, 2005—A group of the most revered South Korean technology companies last week founded the Mobile RFID Forum around an initiative to promote the incorporation of RFID in mobile phones. Electronics giants Samsung and LG Electronics and mobile phone operators SK Telecom, KT Freetel, and LG Telecom view RFID as an important growth technology, and they want to help Korea catch up with the world's RFID leaders in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. They hope to capitalize on the country's existing advanced cellular infrastructure to rapidly roll out compelling new RFID applications like widespread swipe payments. The forum has delegated responsibilities across five divisions, with the goal of having RFID-enabled phones and services available by 2007.
In another sign of Korea's interest in RFID, the country's Information and Communication Minister Chin Dae-je was reported to have visited Alien Technologies during a seven-day visit to the U.S. done to attract technology investment. Apparently Dae-je pitched Alien on establishing a research lab in Korea.
