March 1, 2005—ODIN technologies, the Reston, Virginia-based company that applies scientific method to consult RFID implementers on best practices, recently released the “EPC Tag Benchmark,” a report comparing and contrasting 14 different RFID tags from vendors Impinj, Avery Dennison, Alien Technologies, Symbol, and Rafsec. The report’s premise is that not all tags are created equal; some are better for certain environments than others. The company therefore tested how well each tag performed in certain conditions and alongside varying materials like paper, plastic, water, and metal. ODIN aims for the report, which sells for $425 and $995 for the single-user and enterprise-use licenses, respectively, to provide guidance to RFID implementers during the tag selection process.
According to Chris Fennig, ODIN’s Director of Professional Services, Avery Dennison’s tag products fared the best under the barrage of tests. While strong product performance from a company as experienced and large as Avery Dennison might not be surprising, one does wonder why it hasn’t secured the industry mindshare that competing tag manufacturers like Alien and Matrics have. The likely answer is that an official RFID division was only formed back in September. But now, with leading products and a $35 million commitment to that RFID division, expect Avery Dennison to quickly become a contender.
