December 3, 2004—Leading RFID manufacturer Intermec last week demonstrated what it is calling the “industry’s first working EPC UHF Generation 2 RFID reader.” The Everett, Washington-based company was showing the reader to representatives of EPCglobal, the organization in charge of developing the second generation (“GEN 2”) RFID standard. Demonstration of standard-compatible products is a last step in the GEN 2 ratification process. The idea is for RFID vendors to develop functioning proof-of-concept prototypes that comply with the new standard specifications, thereby assuring the standard’s viability. Intermec demonstrated a firmware upgrade to its IF5 Intellitag RFID model, a reader used widely in German retailer METRO Group’s recent RFID deployment.
