Hybrid RTLS Solution Enables LoRaWAN Asset Management

By Rich Handley

A customizable system developed by Favendo, Abeeway and Actility is built to increase productivity, reduce search times and improve employee safety, both indoors and outdoors.

ActilityAbeeway and Favendo have announced a joint Internet of Things (IoT)-based tracking evaluation kit. According to the companies, the kit offers a location solution that provides indoor and outdoor tracking for individuals and assets in various industries, enabling users to increase productivity, reduce search times and improve employee safety. This includes both indoor presence and proximity use cases.

The solution, the partners explain, combines LoRaWAN and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technologies. The evaluation kit includes the hardware and software necessary to carry out a deployment, along with support and assistance with onsite installation and rollout. The kit is available now for purchase at Actility's ThingPark Market, an IoT marketplace offering a catalog of LoRaWAN devices and starter kits.

Favendo, a provider of real-time location services, offers mobile tracking and navigation solutions for cruise ships, airports, sports stadiums and factories, as well as for the healthcare and mining industries. Actility supplies industrial-grade low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) connectivity solutions for the Internet of Things, enabling users to deploy, operate and maintain public and private wireless IoT networks within a unified, scalable network infrastructure. Abeeway, meanwhile, offers low-power fused geolocation and disruptive IoT tracking solutions utilizing a multi-technology location system designed for long range, low-power consumption and LoRaWAN connectivity.

The system increases productivity, reduces search times and improves employee safety, both indoors and outdoors.

An Actility channel and solution partner since 2020, Favendo has experience with location solutions for challenging environments. Its real-time location system (RTLS) platform enables precise indoor positioning and navigation, proximity functions, and asset and people tracking based on BLE technology. The integration of Abeeway's tracking devices and LoRaWAN connectivity with Actility's ThingPark Enterprise platform allows coverage both indoors and outdoors. The partnership provides a tracking solution for businesses of any type, the companies report.

This multi-vendor location solution is designed to offer reliable location data for complex use cases or in hazardous environments, and it provides near-real-time data regarding the locations of machines, tools and employees. According to the companies, the customizable IoT solution is suitable for such use cases as open pit mines, theft prevention, underground mining, employee safety tracking and warehouse logistics.

With a standard JSON/REST push-pull application programming interface (API), all status and location data generated can be published directly into third-party systems, such as customer relationship management or enterprise resource planning systems, or Favendo's Asset Tracking Viewer can search and find assets for users. Favendo is a partner of RTLS provider Quuppa, and it has experience planning and installing angle-of-arrival infrastructures. Quuppa and Actility have entered a technological partnership for tracking systems, and Favendo can now offer hybrid, scalable RTLS solutions.

ThingPark Enterprise, a LoRaWAN IoT connectivity-management platform, was built to let customers create network infrastructure by managing LoRaWAN gateways, as well as add new LoRaWAN devices, monitor network operations and control the flow of data to application servers. Designed specifically for enterprises, the platform is scalable and offers a low-power IoT communication infrastructure to enable an infinite number of industrial use cases, the company reports.

Abeeway's devices allow continuous usage for years at a time via LoRaWAN connectivity. The devices work both indoors and outdoors due to a multi-technology geolocation system that integrates GPS functionality, the company's low-power GPS, Wi-Fi sniffing and BLE beaconing for precise indoor tracking. Abeeway's devices feature low-power chipsets and enable flexible coverage in various scenarios.

Favendo's open API lets users feed location data from the Thingpark Location Engine into Favendo's Asset Tracking Viewer (ATV), allowing users to pinpoint tagged assets on a map. The ATV front-end solution finds and locates assets in both indoor and outdoor environments, regardless of system or software. With an open API, location data can be integrated with third-party applications if necessary.
