September 17, 2004—As RFID increasingly grabs the attention of the press, investors, and privacy activists, government officials are starting to take note as well. Senator Byron Dorgan of North Dakota this week advocated the participation of the government in the development of RFID. Other legislators feel the same, with five states already considering RFID laws. Most of the attention is in response to the privacy concerns surrounding the technology. The question is: should officials let the market determine RFID privacy protection best practices, or should they assume the worst and impose regulation to ensure that corporations behave responsibly?
