January 17, 2005—RFID products manufacturer Impinj of Seattle and electronics and semiconductor giant Texas Instruments of Dallas announced a deal today whereby they will cooperate to provide EPCglobal Generation 2 compliant RFID products. The goal of the partnership is interoperability, with the hope presumably being that the two companies can recommend each another’s products to clients, pitching the compatibility and ease-of-integration. As Impinj CEO Bill Colleran is quoted as saying, “Through our cooperation, Impinj and TI will ensure a supply of interoperable Gen 2 products from two complementary sources.”
While Impinj has been an active and visible player in RFID for some time now, TI’s presence has long been expected to grow from its already strong position into an even more dominant one. The company has been watching from the sidelines of the RFID tag market as it waited for GEN 2 ratification. Now that GEN 2 is here, TI is expected to start aggressively ramping up RFID tag production, with the first tags available in Q3. This announcement with Impinj suggests that the company is wasting no time.
