October 28, 2004—Wal-Mart will roll out RFID at a Plano, Texas Sam's Club, the company's bulk retailing chain. While the move comes as no surprise given Wal-Mart's long-held plan to implement RFID at Sam's Club, it is good news to the extent that the RFID industry's primary retail driver remains committed to the technology and is moving full steam ahead with its RFID plans. It's interesting to note, too, how proactive the company plans to be in notifying and comforting Sam's Club customers regarding the RFID presence: signs and literature explaining RFID will be posted, and the RFID tags will be easy to remove from the purchased products. It seems clear that Wal-Mart has taken consumer privacy concerns to heart, and, while not backing away from its plans to use RFID, it has decided to communicate its intentions more effectively. Given Wal-Mart's role as Retail's leader, it's fair to assume that the retailing establishment will follow suit. That's good news, for both the RFID industry and the consumer.
