I want to be able to hide and expose a tag. What is the minimum area that would need to be shielded in order for the tag to be invisible to a reader?

Ken,

You would need to shield the entire antenna from receiving a signal. You would likely need to shield both sides of the antenna, since blocking signals from one side might not be enough. The signal might bounce off a wall or object and reach the back side of the antenna, enabling the tag to communicate with the reader.
