Every passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) transponder employs a particular air-interface protocol (most use the EPC Gen 2 standard). It is this protocol that governs backscatter modulation. The air-interface protocol enables a tag and reader to synchronize communication, and the protocol stored in the transponder chip governs the communication of binary data via backscatter. The EPC Gen 2 protocol enables the tag to use amplitude shift keying (ASK), Miller encoding and FMO encoding, depending on the situation. These are essentially the "languages" that tags and readers speak through backscatter, and the air-interface protocol tells the tag which language to use.
