What issues do I need to consider?

There are a number of different aspects to security. One issue is how to prevent the interception of communication between tags and readers. A company called SecureRF has created a method of protecting the transmission of passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) tags based on the Electronic Product Code (EPC) air-interface protocol (see SecureRF Creates New Encryption Method). And NXP Semiconductors released a new chip at RFID Journal LIVE! 2015 that allows the transponder to transmit a dynamic, encrypted password that rents a tag from being read without authorization (see
NXP Releases IC for Secure Encrypted UHF Reads).

Another issue is copying a tag and using it without authorization. This could be done to counterfeit a product, gain access to a building or engage in other nefarious deeds. Verayo has developed an inclinable tag that prevents this (see Verayo, Bartronics Unveil Unclonable Solution for Indian ID Market and Verayo and SkyeTek Demo Unclonable RFID Authentication Solution).
