ThingMagic's Vega ruggedized reader sells for apprpximately $800, without antennas. Alien Technology's ALR-9650 integrated RFID reader costs a bit more than that, but has a built-in antenna. You can also purchase ThingMagic's USB Plus+ RFID reader for less than $500. This device is designed for desktop applications. In addition, there are several simple readers that connect to a laptop via Bluetooth, such as Tertium Technology's BlueBerry HS.
