Ask The ExpertsAre There Any Types of Merchandise That Cannot Be RFID-Tagged?
RFID Journal Staff asked 8 years ago

It seems like companies can tag everything from watches to water bottles to metal. Is that an accurate statement?

David,

Virtually anything can be tagged, though some products, such as those composed of metal, require special tags. There is also a difference between reading a tag on a single product and reading those on many products stacked close together. If you put a special on-metal tag on a can of paint, you could read it with no problem. But if you were to stack the cans on a pallet and then try to read a tag on a can in the middle, it is unlikely that you would be able to do so. The energy from the reader would not reach the tag—and even if it did, it's likely that the signal from the tag would be blocked from reaching the reader antenna.
