How is this accomplished?

Swift,

Most microlocationing is being done via Bluetooth beacons, which are placed at strategical locations such as near a store display. When a person approaches with a cell phone with Bluetooth functionality turned on, a message is sent from the beacon to the phone. It is possible to locate a person via a passive or active RFID tag.

With a passive tag, when a person comes within the read field, the tag is interrogated and the person is identified. Because you know the read field, you know roughly where the person is standing. An active tag sends out a signal, which one or more readers pick up. Triangulation or another technique is used to determine that person's location to within a few feet or meters.

I hope this helps you.
