RFID can be used to track laptops within a facility and as they exit the premises. We've written a few articles about organizations that are doing precisely that:

Companies are employing passive UHF RFID tags attached to or embedded inside the housings of laptops. Typically, readers are installed at entrances, exits and key passageways within a facility. In this way, administrators can determine which laptops have left the building and roughly where they are inside the premises.
