RFID Journal Staff asked 6 years ago I have a question regarding RFID tags' suitability to track products that will not move in a closed-loop system. I understand that tags are being used by many companies in closed-loop environments. If I wanted to use passive tags for each of my products, in order to uniquely identify them, would that be possible? I am looking to sell some goods through Amazon and our own e-commerce website. Would passive RFID tags help me to navigate Amazon's requirement of having a European Article Number (EAN) for each product?

Yes, you can use RFID to uniquely identify each of your products. You would still need to have an EAN on each product, but you could link the serial number in the RFID transponder to the EAN in your database. That way, you could quickly locate the EAN for any given item. However, storing the EAN in the transponder would not, at this time, meet Amazon's requirements, since the company is not currently using RFID to track the items it receives at its warehouses.
