Golfing for a Good Cause

RFID Journal LIVE! will include a golf outing to raise money for the Mike Sullivan Memorial Scholarship.

By Mark Roberti

Jan. 30, 2006—On Sunday, April 30, RFID Journal will host the second Mike Sullivan Memorial Golf Tournament at the Silverstone Golf Club in Las Vegas, as part of RFID Journal LIVE! 2006, our fourth annual conference and exhibition. Mike Sullivan worked with the folks at Gillette on their RFID efforts and was active in EPCglobal's standardization efforts. He passed away suddenly in 2005 from a heart attack, and his friends and colleagues chose to honor his memory by creating the Mike Sullivan Memorial Scholarship, holding a golf tournament to raise money for a scholarship fund under the Boston Scholars Program (see In Memory of Mike Sullivan).

I've been working with Mike's friends and the folks at Boston Scholars to set this up. At the golf outing, we will sell sponsorships of each hole, allowing sponsors to invite their top customers to play a round; if we can, we will open the tournament up to individuals attending the event who would like to come in a day early and enjoy a round of golf, as well. There's a link on the RFID Journal LIVE! 2006 Web site.

All monies from the event will be collected by Boston Scholars. After deducting the expenses for putting on the event, all proceeds will go to the fund. The event will be followed by a dinner, at which we'll give away some prizes.

I got involved because this is a good cause and because a benefit golf tournament will enhance our event in Las Vegas. Everyone in the RFID industry—technology providers, consultants, systems integrators and end users—has been working overtime for the past couple of years to keep pace with developments and turn the vision of using RFID to track goods in the open supply chain into reality. This is a chance to play a round of golf together and get to know each other on a personal level. I'm certainly looking forward to teeing up on a gorgeous golf course and, perhaps, getting the scoop on some new RFID deployments under way.

The tournament is also an opportunity for RFID Journal to give something back to the RFID community and the community at large. The first golf tournament, held on Sept. 28, raised $20,000 for the fund. I'm hoping we can do even better this time around. If you are a sponsor of RFID Journal LIVE! 2006 and would also like to sponsor a hole at the event, please contact Julia Perkins at Boston Scholars. Part of your sponsorship is tax-deductible.
