Do I need long-range RFID tags for monitoring laptops and tablets? What types of tags are required for this application?

Chinmoy,

There is no single perfect tag for tracking laptops. The right tag depends on several factors, including cost, read range required, laptop size and willingness to perform maintenance.

If you required a read range of around 10 feet, you could use a passive UHF tag, which would be inexpensive and can usually be placed inside the plastic housing in an area away from metal (since metal detunes a tag and makes it difficult to read). If you were looking for a read range of 100 feet, however, you would need to use an active tag, which has a battery. An active tag costs much more than a passive tag ($50 apiece versus 10 cents) and is much larger, so it must be attached to the outside of the computer. Active tags also must be replaced when their battery dies.
