RFID Journal Staff asked 5 years ago Is there a shield or enclosure you would recommend that would keep electronics from overheating in direct sunlight? Do you have any suggestions for units that would be smaller or more aesthetically pleasing, or simply more robust?

To answer your question, I reached out to Sanjiv Dua at RFID4U. He says that for outdoor installations, his company has used a National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) enclosure with a built-in fan, or fans, to keep electronics from overheating. "In combination with a reader heat sink," he adds, "they didn't break down." He notes that if a reader were located in a desert or at some other location where it would get extremely hot, you might need something more robust.
I think you would need to work with a company that could supply a door-locking mechanism and have the firm build for you an insulated, but attractive, unit to house the reader. It would need to be a customized solution.
