Could this be done via software, and would I need the manufacturer's SDK for the reader to do this?

Muhmin,

It would depend on which reader you purchased, but in general, I would say yes, you could do this. Most passive UHF RFID readers come with software that allows you to send commands to the device. For example, you might have 100 tagged cases traveling on a conveyor, and you want to send 50 of them down one lane and 50 down another. You could send the serial numbers to the reader for the 50 you want diverted to the left, hook the reader's output port to the diverter and have the reader activate the diverter each time it read one of those 50 tags. You would need to talk to the reader manufacturer to determine whether your device comes with such software standard, or if needs to be developed using an API.
